The Eight Essential Questions when Choosing a Potential Painter

1) Are your painters sub-contractors or employees?

There is no right or wrong answer here, as both have advantages and disadvantages for the business owner and the consumer. The key is to understand these dynamics and optimize both models for seamless and amazing results. PaintPositive employs both models with great results. We are an aligned team. Virtually 100% of our professional painters are employees.

2) Are you insured?

As a home-owner and a business owner, you absolutely want to work with contractors and or tradespeople who are insured. Like the TV commercials say, “life happens.” If it can happen, it will happen. PaintPositive takes extraordinary measures to leave no footprint; however, we also realize that insurance is not only required, but prudent. The suggested amount to look for would be one million dollars per incident and 2 million dollars aggregate.     

3) What specific type of preparation do you do?

Before we prescribe a solution, PaintPositive first diagnoses many factors. Most importantly are the goal of the project and the substrate condition. We use virtually every preparation technique for residential and commercial painting, which includes everything from good old-fashioned hand-sanding, to utilizing state of the art chemicals, paints, and the standard pressure-washing. The key is it’s done correctly, tailored for the specific project, with great results! PaintPositive understands all facets of preparation. Preparation is nine tenths of a great job.

4) What type of paints do you use?

As long as today’s name brands are used, you will be in good shape. Within each brand, there are “good, better, best” and they offer a wide range of applications. The key for PaintPositive is a relationship with a quality vendor. We utilize virtually 100% Sherwin Williams paints because of the quality, service, and their ability to provide a product and solution for every project.

5) What technique will be utilized?

We utilize all techniques, and much like preparation, it depends on the scope of the project. Typically, we use traditional brush and roll. We also use state of the art airless sprayers. We also back roll, back brush, and use fine finish sprayers for cabinet work.

6) Will you stay on my job full-time?

We understand it is a hassle to have contractors in your home or business. We prefer and strive to be in and out as quickly as possible. We are very sensitive to your schedule and will work with you to minimize disruption. PaintPositive will start and stay on your job—weather permitting, if exterior.

7) How much down payment is required?

That is a great question. Be careful if someone is asking too much. Check references, Better Business Bureau, etc. PaintPositive asks 15 percent to ensure and guarantee your project secures time in our calendar.

8) What do you do for continual learning and product information?

Painting is not as simple as most people think. There are continual new products, supplies, equipment, et cetera, that result in a better finished surface. PaintPositive is part of the Professional Decorating Contractors Association (PDCA). In addition, we attend Sherwin Williams training courses, we have the full support of their technical team, and are part of local painters forums.
